2020.09.21 08:33 pakodanomics Need help learning exploratory data analysis, preprocessing, classical (non-DL) methods in NLP, and ensembling.

Hi. I have a machine learning course in college. However, there is a project component I really need to get working on from right now even though the course has just started. It will be a Kaggle contest but also with elements where they we have to justify our experimentation process. A key rule is that there is a blanket ban on all Deep Learning methods (though embeddings are allowed).

My problem statement is going to be a reduced-dataset version of the Quora Insincere Questions problem on Kaggle.

I have a fair bit of experience with Deep Learning based methods, thanks to the deeplearning.ai specialization, but almost know nothing of the classical methods like SVM, Kernels etc and I also know nothing about preprocessing, exploratory data analysis and other methods.

Where should I learn these things from? Waiting for it to be covered in the regular course is not an option. At all.

Thanks,
pAkOdA

2020.09.21 00:56 AnameNotYetTaken32 How do you know if you're an actual moron? As in - truly below average intelligence.

I ask this as seriously as possible. Lately I've noticed a trend in my life that may be a result of hyper sensitivity, but it is far too common to ignore.
The trend is basically reflective of me and it would be unwise to just brush it off, it goes as follows.
  1. When I ask a question on seemingly any form of online conversation - Youtube, Quora, Message boards, ect - People usually respond with "What a stupid question", "Are you really asking this?", ect. If it's not that, I am somehow always off the mark. As though I view the subtext of every story and manage to form a conclusion that is just incredibly daft or unresonable.
  2. I am terrible at debates. I don't like to debate, but even if I had a data sheet with all of the facts on my side and I was objectively right... I would still lose. Somehow the other person would manage to make me feel stupid and I would just give up.
  3. I don't fit in. I have odd or obscure hobbies, don't like what others like and have never fit into a social circle. I am NOT anti-social, I am great at small talk, but in the long run the friendships aren't ever there.
I am honestly wondering how you know if you're below average intelligence. I don't buy into that "Well, maybe you're really good in some areas but lack in others". I'm not. Not at all. There isn't some prodigious shit going on where I trade most of the social graces normal people have for one extreme talent. The only thing I could think of would be my verbal intelligence. In person, I am a fantastic speaker... on the surface. I can package sentences nicely, but the depth is lacking.
There have even been times where on UnpopularOpinion, I post a thought and it gets downvoted into oblivion. I wonder "Has anyone else had the same opinion as me?", and despite it being my EXACT same thought, this person managed to word it where everyone agrees and upvotes them. I laugh because it's almost out of a dark comedy.
I can't reiterate this enough. I always miss the mark and it is very frustrating. Do you see how they joke about Mark Zuckerberg being an alien? That's me. It's these foul attempts at joining a conversation but from the mind of an alien. Like, man - normal people do not think that way. Politics is a great example. Most Republicans identify with one set of traits, Democrats identify with others. Each isle has a common set of beliefs. But me? My beliefs are so fucking warped and out there that people of both parties I know look at me as if to say "Yeah... that's not really even a viewpoint".

The Solution:
1. Use solar and wind power to pump water back up into dam reservoirs, where the water can be released as necessary to generate powerhttp://iasir.net/AIJRSTEMpapers/AIJRSTEM17-301.pdf.. This will also help salmon with hot water in rivers. 2. Convert all existing gas and liquid stores of CO2 to coal. Use Dr. Daeneke’s process https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-08824-8, and refill existing defunct coal mines and oil fields with amorphous carbon or 3D print graphene to add value for building space elevators to replace airports. (see point 6) 3. Stop making plastic. Use edible and compostable single use packaging instead. And if it breaks down quickly in the ocean make sure these byproducts feed sea life. 4. All existing carbon pollution energy generation in BChttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generating_stations_in_British_Columbia can be converted to saltwater power(hydrogen)https://www.pnas.org/content/116/14/6624 married up with floating solar farms where near saltwater 5. Convert all oilfields over to graphene production for the space industry. Or use a biological process to create aerogel (so long as the bacteria doesn't get into the wrong environment) Coupling CRISPR to smart hydrogels Nature Methods A giant graphene plant near the oilpatch using the above power sources and carbon dioxide inputs, to turn the supercapacitor quality carbon from Dr. Daemekés process into 3D printed graphene https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/northrop-grumman-granted-patent-for-composite-fiber-3d-printing-149306/, hydrogen-filled or vacuum filled graphene chain links. Could https://physicsworld.com/a/high-quality-graphene-foams-are-made-from-organic-waste/ even recycle cellulose for the graphene For a north pole space tower.https://www.materialstoday.com/carbon/news/graphene-balloons-dont-burst-under-pressure/ Yes you heard right. Space tower. A FLOATING space tower. Aerogels are super light and there are several new ways of making it.

The tower could be held upright by using sensitve air pressure sensors inside and outside the tower that automatically increase or decrease the hydrogen gas pressure within the graphene membrane, in order to keep that section floating/upright at exactly the right altitude. Piezoelectric wind could be used to power this.https://www.nasa.gov/ames-partnerships/technology/technology-opportunity-compliant-electrode-and-composite-materials-for-piezoelectric-wind Decrease pressure in the cell with any slight change in elevation down, increase pressure with any slight change in elevation uphttps://www.omega.ca/en/motion-control/pneumatic-components/c/pressure-regulators with integrated altitude sensor. Power for this could come from piezoelectric wind strands at the jet stream. (For examples see https://belatchew.com/en/projekt/strawscrape ) Each section piled on the other like an extension of the earths gravitational north pole, using a hydrogen filled (kevlar? graphene?) balloon to float to the top of the tower, similar to other proposed ideas https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms12587, https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/canada-s-space-elevator-explained-1.2536409, https://www.nasa.gov/vision/space/gettingtospace/16sep_rightstuff.html. At the top a solar-powered valve would compress the hydrogen that was used to float up into a liquid fuel cell for travel along the graphene rail.https://www.gasworld.com/hydrogen-trains-begin-operating-in-germany/2015445.article The tower would have a rotating base, and with a floating graphene chain rail/ramp at top that slowly ramps up to space elevator terminal/ISS at the equator https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/20653/why-isnt-it-possible-to-build-a-space-elevator-at-the-north-pole. The centifugal force of the earthhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator would provide some of the acceleration up the ramp, the rest would be a combination of hydrogen cells and maglev train (to reduce friction and wear and tear on the graphene) with the rail. This gentle accelleration/decelleration might help those with soft stomachs. 6. Space suits would have to be built with cosmic radiation blocking capability since both poles are exposed to relatively high levels (CsI lattice doped with Sodium is currently used to block neutrinos. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/08/milk-jug-sized-detector-captures-neutrinos-whole-new-way If it can block neutrinos, what else can it block??? Could be the ultimate solution for space suits and even moon bases....Could also give travellers bacterial elixir which protects from radiation? https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0160575 Or this one recently used on ISS.
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.16.205534v1
7. Develop experimental solar powered mobile carbon extraction equipment (again using Dr. Daenekés process) to capture methane and CO2 bubbles trapped in the refrozen bottom of thermokarst lakes before or during the spring melts so it cannot escape into the atmosphere. Scientists are already developing mobile AUV’s for this purpose.https://geog.ucalgary.ca/manageprofile/profiles/chris-hugenholtz This would also allow scientists to get better estimates of the scope of the problem. And if successful, lead to large scale deployment of mobile CO2 collection units near highest PPM point sources. There are drones that can carry quite big loads (even people, soon!)https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/poeir-jets-develops-indias-first-3d-printed-heavy-lift-hybrid-drones-149757/ 8. Get an International Team together to build space elevatospace tower at the north pole. International Legal Framework used for the international space station could be transferred to the Space Towerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Space_Station_program , especially since its initial use could be for transporting supplies to ISS, and satellite deployment. If successful and proven this way, it could make classic (and expensive) https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/how-much-does-space-travel-cost-ncna919011 satellite deployment obsolete. 9. Winte Early Springtime CO2 already naturally flows to the coldest regions in the north, and the concentrations are highest up there in winteearly spring anyways. See the Barrow, Alaska line in this grid :https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/webdata/ccgg/trends/global_trend.pdf C02 extraction at the north pole in winter would be perfect. Once the underground CO2 storage at the oilsands in Alberta run out of CO2 to feed into the graphene factory, CO2 could be extracted where concentrations are highest, at the north pole, which happens to be where the space tower would be built anyways, since space is closer there, and tower doesn’t need to be as tall as a result. https://scied.ucar.edu/shortcontent/troposphere-overview 10. Floating mobile solar power generation can be set up at the North Pole to take advantage of the 24 hr sun in summer. https://swimsol.com/ Saltwater powered (Hydrogen powered) boat https://boatingindustry.com/news/2018/09/26/marinemax-granted-first-technology-license-for-hydrogen-boat-propulsion/ can transport the solar array to the Antarctic to build the correspondng South Pole tower during their summer (when they get 24hr sun), with the graphene extracted from the atmosphere during winter. Other potential power sources at the tower could harness the temperature differential between space and the earth, maybe? https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(19)30412-X Need to look more closely at the true power output of this. 11. The tower would be solid underwater at the pole, (no earthquakes in this area)https://www.britannica.com/place/Lomonosov-Ridge until it gets to the atmosphere (probably constructed by a company that has already built large sea platforms) , at which point the graphene chain links are filled with hydrogen (work with Ballardhttp://ballard.com/about-ballard to develop this?) , which is already a byproduct of the saltwater electrolysis at the bottom of the tower. This buoyancy will keep the tower upright, reducing gravity. The graphene links are filled like a balloon and is strong enough to safely contain hydrogen at 100 times the strength of steelhttp://science.sciencemag.org/content/321/5887/385.full . Any deformities in the graphene links would be detected by the high visual accuity sensors on the robot https://krakenrobotics.com/products/thunderfish/ (also see Mantis shrimp eye camera https://www.osapublishing.org/optica/abstract.cfm?uri=optica-5-10-1240), and links replaced as soon as identified. 12. Multiple Canadian and ISS related companies could benefit from this: Salt Water Power (), Canadian Platform designers and manufacturers (eg. Doris Development)https://www.doris-engineering.com/, Solar Farm manufacturers (eg CanadianSolar, or one of thesehttps://cleantechnica.com/2018/04/05/hanwha-q-cells-chosen-to-power-netherlands-largest-floating-solar-project/ ), 3D Graphene Printers (eg. Graphene 3D labhttp://www.graphene3dlab.com/s/home.asp), Space vehicle manufacterers (eg SpaceEx,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCMaglev, https://www.space.com/14656-japanese-space-elevator-2050-proposal.html ), Robots that maintain the length of the chain (eg Kraken Robotshttps://krakenrobotics.com/products/thunderfish/), Security companies (Drawn from members of the ISS), Temporary housing for construction workers could be built very cheaply at the base of the space tower https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/apis-cor-3d-prints-house-one-day-106783/ 13. Floating Space Tower and Chain can be used in several world-saving ways. Giant solar sail can be unfurled at the tophttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-based_solar_power to collect power and block sun at poles/ cool the arctic fridge, which is definitely required if we are to have any hope of limiting climate change. A similar sail can be unfurled in antarctica to keep the south pole cool as well. 14. Space Junk can finally be collectedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_debris instead of adding to the orbital junkyard. Eventually the space junk blob collected (perhaps using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RemoveDEBRIS) at the end of the cable with a giant magnet at the end (magnet is part of the maglev train) will have enough combined weight to serve as a perfect counterweight for an equator space elevator (saving us from trying to capture an asteroid for this purpose https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_Redirect_Mission 15. Space tower network could eventually be used as a planetary defense network to deflect asteroids (also see number 14 above)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_asteroid_close_approaches_to_Earth 16. Increased tourism for Nunavut and for Canada. A lot of people will want to try it out and will pay dearly to do so. https://www.nunavuttourism.com/And they will feel good about it because their dollars went to a very good cause (cooling planet, cleaning planet of space junk, protecting planet from asteroids, energizing planet with solar power) The adventurous type that is interested in space travel would also find the idea of arctic adventure appealing as well. https://www.followmeaway.com/things-know-traveling-to-nunavut/ Going into space is very much like going to the ends of the earth. 17. If successful, a similar network of these towers could replace airports eventually between larger population centres that also have elevators (Japan https://www.space.com/14656-japanese-space-elevator-2050-proposal.html, and China https://www.yicaiglobal.com/news/china-shoots-stars-plans-build-space-elevator-2045 . Airport tarmac could be converted back to forest, farmland, housing. Many of the technologies used above could have spin-offs to other fields : Hydrogen or Electric AI controlled drones https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/poeir-jets-develops-indias-first-3d-printed-heavy-lift-hybrid-drones-149757/or float planes https://vancouversun.com/business/energy/harbour-air-to-add-zero-emission-electric-plane-aims-to-convert-whole-fleet for human and material transport. To prevent accidents, AI could control the drones. Its not as far off as you think : http://www.thedrive.com/tech/22062/the-ai-powered-mystic-drone-autonomously-follows-you-and-recognizes-gestures. Which could also lead to the elimination and reclamation of roads and highways. Cities cover an astounding 3% of earths surface https://www.livescience.com/6893-cities-cover-earth-realized.html. Imagine windows turned into solar panels, https://globalnews.ca/news/4892180/edmonton-tech-firm-to-turn-windows-into-solar-panels-gets-financial-boost-to-go-commercial/ and pavement removed, trees and farms planted again? 18. Air conditioning companies (eg Dyson) can develop an air conditioner that also sucks CO2 out of the air to make carbon spools suitable for countertop 3D printers (Perhaps using Dr. Daenike’s processhttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-08824-8) , which can be used to 3D print biodegradable products that people currently buy at the dollar storehttp://filaments.ca/collections/1-75mm-3d-filaments/ecotough (eg toilet paper) Think of how popular such a product would be in Beijing or anywhere air quality is poorest. And how convenient it would be if you run out of toilet paper https://www.quora.com/Can-3D-printers-print-toilet-paper (lol) 19. Let’s help nature along. Current forest systems cannot keep up with the speed of climate change and this is leading to huge die-offs in every forest ecosystem on earth.https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/episode-413-canada-s-forests-at-risk-the-politics-of-rage-canada-s-spookiest-places-eden-robinson-and-more-1.4878598/drunken-trees-and-browning-forests-why-a-canadian-government-scientist-is-sounding-the-alarm-1.4878622. Forests just aren’t ready for the change in weather. Neither are deserts https://earthsky.org/earth/mars-like-atacanda-desert-rain-brings-death. Trees have the very best ROI in terms of carbon capture. In areas that are starting to see die-offs due to temperature and moisure sensitivity we need to plant species that are on the border of existing ranges. Plant trees ahead of the curve. Planting species that are pest and climate change resistant, integrate with existing and future fungal networks in the soilhttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1128-0 and diversifying the forest. https://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/pubs/science-update-20.pdf We should be doing this for all tree species in all cases of reforestation. https://phys.org/news/2017-11-forests-climate.html Rather than just watching them die. Let’s plan for the future for once. 20. Let’s spread good CO2 fixing bacteria around. Earth’s glaciers are the fridge of the earth. We need to stop them from melting. Clostridium Thermocellum is just one example of an amazing bacteria that might solve this problem. https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2016/10/27/1605482113 If we can create a strain that is cold-adapted (perhaps by importing genes from existing strains in Greenlandhttps://academic.oup.com/femsec/article/53/1/73/518707 and/or Antarcticahttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6316688/), and using CRISPR, change the pigmentation to a reflective one, we can take care of the breakdown of forest fire generated black carbon deposited on Greenland (and all other glaciers on earth). It would also make the ice more reflective, and save our water supplies! 21. People need to keep trees that are alive, alive. Stop planting monocultures so one errant insect gets the chance to wipe out huge forests of its favorite food https://www.nature.com/articles/nature20140. Plant seedlings at harvest! You are already there, harvesting, bent over and using a chain saw to cut down. Reach back and put a baby tree in the ground nearby. Why we aren’t doing this already is mystifying to me. It would also make the harvester feel better about their jobs. Forestry needs to change to firebreak forestry, to protect living trees https://climateatlas.ca/forests-and-climate-change. Better yet stick to harvesting already dead trees (see the pest mortality http://cfs.nrcan.gc.ca/statsprofile) since they still have value and once removed, are not going to be the kindling that starts a big fire. There are massive stands of dead trees out there waiting to catch fire in the new heat.http://nfdp.ccfm.org/en/data/insects.php Let’s prevent them from burning. 22. We need to start feeding food to people and livestock that decreases methane production, and helps with nutrition.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5313486/ Fermented foods added to what is already made is a very simple addition which can change the microbiota of the stomach away from methanogens methane generating) towards methanotrophs. Agroforestry (planting food/timber trees along the border of fields and reclaiming lawns near schools and on private property) could help sequester up to 9.28 gigatons of CO2. (See pg 7, April 2019 Scientific American ) and has many other agricultural benefits https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agroforestry Municipalities need to implement adjustable taxation whereby taxes are reduced for those that convert land around buildings to agroforestry, and the roof to solar panels. Cost sharing with utilities/BC Hydro to offset this loss in taxation revenue could be used to encourage land owners to do this. And school properties could become huge carbon offsets, and a more local food supply. Children could get exercise doing agricultural activities instead of kicking a plastic ball around and this can help children with eco-anxiety as well - making them feel like they are a part of the solution rather contributing to the problem. Kids love planting things, watching those things grow (like magic!), and picking the nuts and berries that result

2020.09.17 18:39 owlwaves Why are people in quora so snobbish, arrogant and just rude?

I used to browse on quora and it used to be a good place to ask professional questions and there were in fact a lot of experts back then.
I just started browsing quora again pretty recently, and omg wtf happened to this place? I usually browse Computer Science, Math related section on quora and some of these people think they are the smartest people in the world...geez.
This is just one of many examples: https://www.quora.com/Is-statistics-a-prerequisite-for-machine-learning#:~:text=Statistics%20is%20not%20necessary%20but,nothing%20terrible%20about%20learning%20statistics.&text=I%20am%20assuming%20you%20want%20to%20develop%20ML%20algorithms.
This was one of the comment:
Says the coddled “data scientist” from Microsoft. I just finished a project working with two Microsoft “data scientists,” wasn’t impressed. Applied machine learning, the real-world, is all about data and little about modeling. Most applied modeling in classification and regression and it doesn’t take a Rhode Scholar to understand either of those metrics.
I just cant browse without shaking my head anymore.
At this point, I think reddit is much better community than quora.

2020.09.16 20:49 lblip123 I built a data dictionary and collaboration tool to establish data organization and business continuity across teams!

My hours and pay were cut at my job due to COVID so I decided to learn development and build a data dictionary and collaboration tool! Think Facebook, stack over flow, and Quora as an internal tool for data analyst/scientist within a company.
The site is www.datalogz.io ... it is not great on mobile (still working on), so please use a computer for testing.
Can’t wait for feedback! Please give the good and the bad :)

I believe quora offers this as well but anyone know of any other services besides facebook or quora? I mean tracking data through pixels and then generating audiences similar to those who have bought your product before.

2020.09.13 19:29 muddy120 Avatar: The Last Airbender MBTI Types

For anyone new to Myers-Briggs, it's a personality type indicator and there are 16 types in total with eight functions they all use with 4 of them being in their main stack.

Sharing this with the Avatar reddit of course too. Tell me your thoughts down below, if you don't care for MBTI please don't comment and spoil the fun of others that do care for it and like it, thank you.
Time to do Avatar, I know I'm gonna piss some people off with this one but no matter and I don't care because its my opinion at the end of the day. You can share your opinions down below and we can debate, now without further ado.
Aang - ENFP, this one is so obvious and most people agree. Aang is one of the most stereotypical ENFPs of all time next to ENFPs like Goku, Simba, Ariel, Judy Hopps, Rapunzel and so on. Everybody knows this with Aang. Aang is curious, is always asking questions about the things he sees and people he meets, is future oriented, imaginative, indecisive, brainstorms possibilities all the time and is always over worrying about things that could possibly happen in the future, always questioning if he's doing the right thing with his Ne and second guessing himself with his Ne indecision and constantly comparing himself to others with his Si inferior as well. He's very creative and is always thinking outside the box with his Ne, he made a air funnel and used it with others to shoot projectiles at the fire nation guys, he came up with the idea to use the Sea Serpent suddenly to put the fire out in the village with his Ne after remembering the detail and experience with his Si. He holds onto the past all the time with his Si with his home and the monks and their teachings, the past means a lot to Aang and it affects his future decision making deeply. He's a clear Fi user as he follows his inner values with everything, he can be bossy and assertive sometimes with his Te and cares about efficiency with the things he cares about strongly, especially when he's made, his Te was all loud and clear when Oppa was taken and his inferior Si holding onto the past experience strongly as well and never letting go of finding him. I could write an essay on why Aang is ENFP but that's going to be for another time when I make a official ENFP post for him in the future, this is my brief overview why Aang is ENFP here though if anyone was confused why which is not many since everyone under the blue moon types Aang ENFP.

Katara - ESFJ, I know I'm gonna piss some people off with this one but I don't care because its my opinion and like everyone I have a right to share it, feel free to agree or disagree down below and we can discuss respectfully. Most people type Katara ESFJ and know this, and you want to know why? Because Katara is the ESFJ archetype. Katara is emotional, always thinking of the emotional needs of others and their feelings, she's emotionally supportive and very sympathetic person, she's traditional and holds onto the past a lot. She's very driven by duty with her Si and cares about honor too. She takes things at face value most of the time and hardly ever sees things beneath the surface at all like with believing Jet and not believing Sokka about him at all, Katara is not intuitive, she's a sensor that takes in details and information currently present to her and compares data and detailed information to the past experience all the time with her Si aux, Katara is always thinking about past details and past experiences with her Si aux all of the time. Katara is fun but uptight and all about rules and regulations and is known for being overly motherly and bossy to everyone and over does everything for everyone like most ESFJs do and are known for, Toph gets angry at her for this as a ISTP and says "your not our mother Katara, your just a kid like everyone else!" Classic ESFJ motherly behavior from Katara. Katara is also very nostalgic with her Si and with objects like the necklace her mother gave her that she always holds onto an treasures in a Si user way, any type can do these things but Katara is clearly a Si user here with this. When Katara is not focused on traditions, the past way and nostalgia and rules, she's very open minded with her Ne to new things and sees multiple possibilities. Fictionalcharactermbti mixed this up with her Ne being curious about new customs and things and culture with Ni and mistyped her ENFJ, ESFJs and SJs can also be open minded about things and want to learn new cultures and history and want to learn everything about them too, you could argue there even more curious than ENFJs because of their Ne curiosity as their third function actually. Katara is curious with her Ne tertiary and is always asking questions and coming up with ideas in tough situations and loves new ideas and new things that are interesting like Aang and Sokka both. Katara is a Ti inferior user, she usually is illogical and overly emotional about everything as we see with Jet and Sokka, her emotional rage in the Iceberg scene, and her inability to listen to logical and reason when she was mad at Zuko and then wanted to avenge her mother and go on the mission with him and didn't listen to Aang or Sokka at all. Despite this Katara uses Ti decently well sometimes like with her caring about the truth of things like Sokka with their Ti both and caring for accuracy and wanting to figure out how things work, and Katara is always sometimes seeing logical inconsistencies with things and deducing the truth on what happening and finding the answering on how to fix any given situation with her Ne and Ti and Si detailed memory too. Katara is the best ESFJ in fiction in my opinion and I hope people see that. Katara is the perfect example of an ESFJ, next to Nami from One Piece and Sakura Haruno from Naruto too, Leorio is ESFJ from Hunter x Hunter and also Rock Lee from Naruto too.

Sokka - ENTP, Oh boy, it's time for Sokka, haha. Like Sasuke Uchiha, people like to call Sokka every personality type, ENTP, ENTJ, ESTJ, I'm still waiting on the ISFP Sokka opinion, haha. But anyways jokes aside, in my opinion Sokka is definitely ENTP, and here's why. Sokka is future oriented, curious, always asking Ne curiosity questions about everything in the outer world and with things and people he meets, he's always brainstorming possibilities and is very indecisive with his Ne like struggling to decide if he should buy the bag or not, he's imaginative and extremely creative and thinks outside the box all the time, he comes up ideas on the spot in a instant all the time with his dom Ne. Sokka cares about truth and accuracy with his Ti, he questioned the fortune teller if her prophecies were true or not with his Ti aux and his Ne curiosity too backing it up dominant in him and making him further inquisitive. Sokka loves figuring out how things work logically with his Ti and likes to break things down to their core and figure them out and how the system and machine works fundamentally, if you don't believe me go back and watch the episode when he is with the gadget guy in the air temple and was interesting in every gadget and questioned how they all worked and functioned to their core with his Ti aux and Ne curiosity too.
Sokka is a Fe user, he's always reading the emotional state of others, he cares about society values and gender norms with his Fe and his Si both, he cares about the group and what the group thinks and feels about him like with trying to prove himself that he can pull his weight and leaving to go find a master to train with to prove to the others and the group that he can hold his own even if he's not a bender like them, Fe tertiary clearly in Sokka here. Sokka holds onto the past all the time, he grudges the fire nation and wants to prove to his dad he can be a great leader, an ENTP friend of mine on PersonalityCafe told me he's just imitating his father and wants to be just like him and a good leader, which is why he feels us to being this efficiency Te dom character that loves giving orders to people and being efficient with the plan but he said Sokka's true self is ENTP. Sokka is just a really efficient and disciplined ENTP because of this and his dad's influence on him and his Si inferior holding onto this and his promise to protect Katara and be a good leader like him that he made to himself all the way back then. But trust me Sokka is still a Si inferior user, he misses details all the time and isn't very organized or strucutred at all, he's scatter-brained and airheaded with his Ne and has his head in the clouds and whenever he comes up with an idea he never thinks of the details through properly most the time which is why most of his everyday plans end up failing so much, a good example of this is Hawky and his Ne idea to deliver a fake apology to Katara from Toph he came up with, Katara then says when she receives it "I know this is you Sokka! Katara can't write!" cause she's blind and can't see, Sokka totally forgot and missed this detail with his Si inferior, he can't remember what his Mother looked like and when he does can only picture Katara everytime when he does and tries. Sokka is one of the best ENTPs of all time, next to Usopp, Doflamingo, and Cell from Dragon Ball and Bulma too is ENTP as well.

Toph - ISTP, Ok Toph time, lets do it. Toph is ISTP, most people know this about her. Sometimes people mistype her ESTP though, I guess I can see why but not really at the same time. Toph is the ISTP stereotype and is a massive introvert as well and Ti dom and Fe inferior user, and here's why. Toph is a calm person and cares a lot about truth and logic and wants to figure out how things work and what motivates people and why they are the way they are. She's very to herself and independent and prefers to live her life her own way and hates rules at all costs so she can live by her own rules and do what shes wants in the moment and have fun in life. Toph is very observant and cares about logical accuracy, she's very in the moment, straight forward and physical and cares a lot about details around him with her Se aux. She's in tune with all the details in her environment and is very calm and collected as a earthbender and can react quickly to any change in movement or vibration in the earth that she senses with her Se and self aware blindness earthbending ability. She cares a lot about truth and it fits her vibrations ability "Your lying Katara" classic Ti dom line here and it comes from her Se aux senses sensing her with the vibrations again, her personality fits her ability perfectly here. Toph reads between lines sometimes with her Ni ter and intuition, she can deduce things and sometimes see patterns in a very focused way and with her Ni hunches and guesses with things. Toph is a clear Fe inferior user, she struggles with her emotions clearly and can't express herself very well. She often feels awkward emotionally but still uses Fe to feel and feed off the emotions of others all the time and gets angry and expressive all the time when she's mad too and cares about the group opinion even if not always. Toph has a Ti dom and Fe conflict with Katara again as a ISTP and her being ESFJ, they see the world differently and argue and fight all the time initially because of it. Toph is blunt, cold, tomboyish and logical and Katara is emotional, motherly, detail oriented, nitpicky, bossy, and overly emotional person in comparison to Toph. Toph is one of the best ISTPs of all time and I hope this post helped you see why here.

Iroh - INFP, now here's another highly debated one. Now I'll admit in the past I mistyped Iroh INFJ, I was wrong for that. Iroh is one of the best INFP characters out there, he's not INFJ, or ENFJ like people think and he's definitely not ENFP lol. Here's why Iroh is one of the best INFPs ever out there in fiction. Iroh follows his inner values and has strong feelings inside about things, he's very calm, laid back and easygoing and takes things as they come and is open to new possibilities all the time. Iroh is not fixated on a few possibilities at all like Ni users, I'm INFJ so I know. Iroh sees multiple possibilities all the time with his aux Ne and does not have Ni tunnel vision. Iroh is peaceful, lazy, and laid back and very inefficient as a Te inferior user. He's very mature and gives great wisdom about things and is all about curiosity and exploration with things and is always open to new perspectives and is never close minded at all or reactionary like his SP hot headed and emotional nephew that I will get to in a minute. Iroh loves new ideas and is very open minded to all possibilities in the world, he cares a lot about honor and certain traditions too with his Si tertiary. He's overall non traditional though as a aux Ne user and prefers newer perspectives over old but with certain things he likes to maintain order and respect and honor as a tertiary Si user and INFP. When Zuko and the fire nation guy fight and finish, he says you have no honor and its sad to see this, classic Si ter answer and response from Iroh here. He's pretty lazy and inefficient overall as a Te inferior user but sometimes gets confident and bossy sometimes with his inferior Te coming out on occasion, but while not often though since overall he's a peaceful chill and nice caring guy and man. He's very sensitive and emotional and follows his inner values and beliefs with everything he does as a Fi dom and INFP and he's very idealistic as well and likes to let people go their own way in life and find their own path, classic INFP behavior and open minded NFP behavior in Iroh here. Iroh is one of the best INFPS of all time.
Here's some great Iroh INFP Posts here:
https://fictionalcharactermbti.tumblr.com/post/152822852224/uncle-iroh-infp-avatar-the-last-airbender
https://fictionalenneagrambti.tumblr.com/post/165408283717/avatar-the-last-airbender-iroh-infp-9w8
Zuko - ISFP, Ok now Zuko now. Now first off Zuko is a clear sensor here, its time to end the intuitive bias with this one. I always saw Zuko as a sensor and mistyped him ISTJ back in the day as a kid, I'm sure you can see why with his constant obsession with finding the avatar but I realized Zuko is a misunderstood and overly reactionary and emotional ISFP through the years and seeing peoples posts and arguments on it, and I totally see it now and can't see him any other type now. But that might sound close minded which it is, so why don't I prove it, why is Zuko a clear and stereotypical ISFP? Zuko is emotional and follows his inner values like Iroh all the time and has strong inner emotions about himself and everything around him in life and doesn't know what to do in life and if he's doing the right thing or not. Zuko uses Fi all the time, like all the time. Reflecting on himself and his inner values, morals, and internal emotional decision making and what is right or wrong and if he's doing the right thing or not is everything to Zuko the whole series, Zuko is a clear Fi dom. Now with that out of the way, Zuko is a Se user not a Ne user at all. Zuko is all about living in the moment and responding quickly to details around him and being observant of all details around him in every situation. He's very impulsive and doesn't think much about the future at all and is always making mistakes in life, some that he regrets for life like betraying Iroh his uncle that his Se was impulsive on and lack foresight on as he was living fully in the moment and his Fi misled him too with his Se both to make that mistake. He explodes with Fi rage and Te inferior rage as well in the campfire, he also rages with his Se aux as well too with his Fi and Te too, he's very bossy and assertive sometimes with his Te inferior but is still very inefficient and struggles with staying on the right path and doing the right thing and getting things done even though his Te years getting goals done and tasks all the time. Even though Zuko is very sensory and in the moment, he sometimes has bursts of wit and intellect and reads between the liens and predicts things well with his Ni hunches and Ni tertiary function he often uses sometimes. Zuko is definitely a Ni tertiary user with his while low but Ni tunnel vision with things and having focused and concise hunches with his Ni tertiary and his mild and random Ni hunches are often right like with trying to find Aang or predicted what Azula would do in this situation and so on. Zuko is definitely ISFP and I hope this post helped explain to you why.
Here's some great Zuko ISFP posts:

https://imagine-mbti.tumblr.com/post/184398816368/avatar-the-last-airbender-zuko-isfp
Bumi - ENTP, Bumi is the best ENTP, he sees possibilities everywhere and even says possibilities are important to Aang as a lesson in the show, he likes to mess with people as a NTP and Te Fe user and loves accuracy and figuring out how things work with his Ti and always questions things and truth. And he cares for the group and the emotional state of others and society values all the time, he struggles with details and is very unorganized and random scatter-brained fun obsessed person and playful ENTP. And he loves new ideas and is always coming up with them like all the trials he puts Aang through and came up with on his own with his dom Ne.
Here's some great Bumi ENTP Posts down below:
https://funkymbtifiction.tumblr.com/post/171246868135/avatar-the-last-airbender-bumi-entp
Avatar Roku - INFJ
Azula - ENTJ, Azula is the ENTJ stereotype. She cares for dominance and power and is very bossy, cold and logical person. She's always reading between the lines with her Ni and questioning and predicting things like with suspecting if Zuko was lying and setting him up for failure in case the Avatar is alive and asks him, she planned that far ahead and looked behind the scenes there and Zuko said no he's dead to make her shut up and stop suspecting things. Azula is all about commanding, future planning and empires and power and taking over nations and expanding her rule and dominance over the world, classic Te dom and Ni aux. She can sometimes live in the moment and notice details around her and respond to the quickly in the moment. She's obviously a clear Fi inferior user and isn't very sensitive at all and is very assertive, blunt and domineering person and very bossy and cold. She ignores inner values over power efficiency and dominance and staying on task with her dom Te but she does still care about them and inner Fi values too. She's deeply misunderstood and sometimes goes into her Fi inferior to understand herself, or at least tries anyway. Everytime she tries to emotionally evaluate herself she fails and falls right back to her Te dominance, she fails to be sensitive in the high school jock party episode with the boy she likes and scares him off with her power hungry Te dominance and ENTJ overlord speech to him. She cries at the end of Avatar and hates showing weakness and breathes fire in agony, regret, and shame. Fi inferior in Azula is obvious and most people see it too, such a deeply misunderstood woman and great character with her, love Azula.
Some great ENTJ Azula posts:

https://fictionalcharactermbti.tumblr.com/post/181084946644/azula-entj-avatar-the-last-airbender-dominant
Firelord Ozai - ENTJ, I'm pretty sure he's ENTJ too but correct me if I'm wrong.
Ty Lee - ESFP, Ty Lee lives in the moment, responds to details around her and reacts quickly to new information and details in a spontaneous fashion. Ne and Se users both can like physical activity, performing and sports. I type Bolin ENFP from Legend of Korra. But Ty Lee is a classic ESFP girl here for sure. I don't even need to go into more detail why, this one is obvious for most people I feel.
I disagree with some of fictionalmbti here and type Sokka ENTP and Katara ESFJ and I explained why in my posts and explanations above. But overall most of the others I agree with here and I agree with Ty Lee as ESFP and Mei ISTJ now:
https://fictionalcharactermbti.tumblr.com/post/124691451914/avatar-the-last-airbender-mbti
Mei - ISTJ, I used to mistype her INTP but people said no she's ISTJ and I see it now.

2020.09.13 09:12 danbrown_notauthor My answer to a Quora question

This question was asked on Quora:
You are sent by a fictional Interstellar faction of your choosing to subjugate modern day Earth. Your orders are to not destroy the planet or all of its inhabitants. What faction do you pick and what are your forces?
Naturally I couldn’t resist...
https://www.quora.com/You-are-sent-by-a-fictional-Interstellar-faction-of-your-choosing-to-subjugate-modern-day-Earth-Your-orders-are-to-not-destroy-the-planet-or-all-of-its-inhabitants-What-faction-do-you-pick-and-what-are-your-forces/answeDan-Brown-385?ch=10&share=e15d70ae&srid=u8G9u
And here is my entire answer...
For any fan of Iain M Banks, this is an easy one.
I choose the Culture. Contact Section. Possibly with a small Special Circumstances team, depending on the nature of the subjugation required.
Most of the following could be accomplished by a single General Contact Unit (GCU), but to achieve the things we want to at scale and without having to wait while production ramps up, a General Systems Vehicle (GSV) would make more sense. Building an orbital would require time and resources.
Now we can do this the subtle way or the unsubtle way. (Note: there is no ‘easy way.’ Both ways are easy for the Culture).
Subtle way
Discreetly influence political leaders. Combination of threats and inducements. Typical inducements usually include discreet access new technologies and to anti-aging treatments. Threats are generally benign - if you don’t play nicely we’ll remove you and replace you with someone who will.
Feed beneficial new technologies in medicine, clean energy, advanced materials etc discreetly to scientists and enlightened companies. Create front organisations to invest in organisations leading to positive outcomes, and buy up/close organisations that are doing harm. Begin improving food production, medical capabilities supply chains, education etc.
Read and monitor 100% of all communications and data on the planet. Quickly identify and watch the terrorists, world leaders planning bad things, anyone who could cause serious harm (excluding petty criminals). Intervene directly where necessary to prevent large scale atrocities. Subtly undermine such people and organisations. Engineer bad leaders’ fall from power. Replace with more enlightened leaders.
Catalogue and sample all ecosystems, flora and fauna. All of it. Should take a few months. From that point, any species which goes extinct can be brought back. Start subtle interventions in fragile ecosystems to protect and preserve them.
This is a longer term project which operates engine the scenes, starts with harm reduction, then moves to positive outcomes and accelerated development.
Unsubtle way
Stand off and use effectors to read and catalogue 100% of data and communications on the planet. Build a complex but accurate picture of who is who and what they are doing. Down to every last inhabitant.
Build and prepare multiple displacers (we’ll be doing things at scale).
Then use effectors to take over every computer system and automated process or device. Civilian devices and systems may keep operating where they do no harm.
Disable every digital/electronic military system. Displace all large scale military equipment (nuclear missiles, ships, tanks etc) into the sun. Render all other weapons inoperable. (Note: this isn’t in case they hurt us. They can’t. This is to stop them doing anything stupid and accidentally hurting each other). Possibly consider some temporary and limited exceptions for local peacekeeping, law enforcement, anti-poaching units etc.
Then simultaneously do a number of things:
  1. Displace avatars directly into the offices, homes, bedrooms (wherever they are) of every world leader, industry leader, religious leader (while trying not to giggle), and serious community leader. Do whatever parlour tricks are necessary to convince them that the avatar is a representative of an overwhelmingly powerful and sophisticated alien civilisation (including, if necessary, displacing them to the ship and back). Be polite and friendly, but firm and unyielding. Inform them that we have been watching, and it’s clear that mankind is incapable of running the planet unsupervised. Make it clear that we are friendly and will harm no one. But that this is not negotiable. They either immediately agree to help; to get with the programme and act as a conduit for information, ideas, beneficial technology transfers etc. That they immediately start to help with improving the lot of everyone earth. Starting with the poor and hungry and sick. Or they’ll be removed from their positions and prevented from communicating widely. Then simply replaced, sidelined and ignored. (Except for any who have committed atrocities. They will be safely and comfortably incarcerated for later trial by their peers, with detailed and irrefutable evidence prepared by us for each case).
  2. Communicate on every TV and radio channel in every language. Tell the world that we are here. We are friendly. We have come to end hunger, disease and pollution, to end tyranny and authoritarianism. Not to panic. To judge us by our actions. People will panic. We may need to intervene in places to prevent harm. We will have been standing by to displace large numbers of drones if necessary to put out fires, prevent people from hurting themselves and each other in the immediate aftermath of such an announcement.
  3. At the same time, displace friendly looking and polite avatars into every TV and radio studio to start the softer side of a charm offensive. Allow them to be interviewed. To be reasonable and friendly and to explain how the people of Earth will have to learn how to live in a post-scarcity society. How it won’t be easy, all of our norms and traditions will be upended, but that this is a good thing. Answer all questions politely and honestly wherever possible. Show things. Demonstrate things. Give information freely. Have easily identifiable avatars walk the streets doing the same thing. Talking. Seeking to gain trust. Shrug off any attacks. Literally ignore them. No one on Earth can harm any of the avatars.
  4. Hand out personal terminals to everyone. Displace terminals directly into the homes of people who are suspicious or afraid or hiding. Use the terminals to talk to anyone and everyone (ship’s Mind is perfectly capable of holding 7 billion conversations at once). Explain. Encourage questions. Ask what people need. Within reason, start to provide it. The biggest challenge will be homes, living space etc. See “longer term” below). But initially, start to provide any material requests that aren’t dangerous and won’t harm anyone else.
  5. Start the large scale displacement and transport of food, medical units and other beneficial items directly to the Earth. Simultaneously, everywhere it is needed. With non-threatening looking drones and avatars speaking the local language, explaining and communicating. Hungry people fed. Sick people cured. Empty the hospitals.
  6. Switch off all polluting forms of energy and transport. Displace the now obsolete equipment into the sun. Replace everything, like for like, with clean and long lasting energy devices. All polluting industries will be shut down.
  7. Catalogue and sample all ecosystems, flora and fauna. All of it. Should take a few months. From that point, any species which goes extinct can be brought back. Start immediate interventions in fragile ecosystems to protect and preserve them.
Longer term
The OP doesn’t explain why we want to subjugate the Earth. I’m assuming we don’t want to destroy it.
Once we start to provide for everyone’s material needs, the issue of living space and protecting the environment will need to be addressed.
We will have prepared for this, by building an Orbital on the direct opposite side of the sun to the Earth, where it couldn’t be seen. Any subtle changes in planetary orbits that might otherwise have been noticed on earth will simply have been hidden. Telescopes fooled, data changed etc.
The Orbital will mirror all Earth ecosystems and continents. It will be seeded with Earth flora and fauna. Including rebuilding fragile and lost ecosystems. And everyone on Earth will be offered a new home if if they wish to take it. It will be strongly encouraged, because we wish to reduce the population of the planet to sustainable levels to allow the planet itself to recover.
There.
Earth subjugated. In a benign way. Nothing to cause the average Culture Mind to break a sweat. But an interesting exercise for one. No doubt the Mind will take delight and pride in identifying the most elegant and efficient ways of achieving all of the above.

My hours and pay were cut at my job due to COVID so instead of sitting around I decided to learn development and build a data dictionary and collaboration tool! Think Facebook, stack over flow, and Quora for data analyst, but an internal tool! I’m curious if anyone is interested in testing it or being a beta user! :)

2020.09.11 17:05 Plugfix27 Posting guide for newbies

There is a visible trend observed when subreddits grow at a high-rate, the quality of the sub tends to get diluted. We acknowledge that there is ambiguity involved to posting on this subreddit and it may not be as clear to everyone. There is no such thing as an absolute guide to posting on this sub as we don't want to restrict users from being creative. However, as mentioned before, quality control is the utmost priority of the mods.
I'd like to address some of the basic rules on this sub and then we can get to more complex etiquette.
  1. Always use 'np' links when putting up posts and comments. We do not endorse brigading and you alone are responsible for your account being banned.
  2. Chaddis, Chintus and other types of sanghis are required to ingrain the Language rule(Rule 2) and PWCI(Rule 3) into their heads and follow them sincerely. Librandus are encouraged to connect with their roots and are thus exempted from this, although PWCI maybe enforced at mods discretion if they detect weakness in your dedication towards Shara Bolshevism
  3. Avoid reposting content, whether they are memes, articles, links etc.
  4. Unless it is something out of the ordinary, do not post ban messages you recieve from the usual suspects of Indiaverse. Post it on our Discord channel if you wish to do so.
  5. Censor personal details of users from other platforms.
Now I will address the ambiguous/unwritten posting etiquette on this sub. Yes, there is no absolute guide but it would be helpful if you could keep these points in mind before attempting to post on this subreddit-
You are free to add questions and stuff like that too.
Remember, this is not a definitive guide to posting. It is just something we would like you to keep in mind before posting. Mods have also been guilty of violating these rules in the past. So don't worry if your post gets removed. This is meant to be a subreddit for people to relax, get a good laugh and sometimes engage in good-faith discussions.

2020.09.10 17:35 RiceAndPlums The REAL Conspiracy Behind the SAT essay (note: totally clickbait title)

Quarantine/the Virus delayed my SAT and kinda wasted my preparation because I forgot almost everything I studied before the summer ARRGGHHH! so I'm not sure if whatever I have learned actually works. I figure I'd share the things I learned anyways because my need for "expressing myself" has been suddenly re-awakened.
Cue drum roll.
I have written an article that (in theory) covers tips and other stuff that supposedly makes a good SAT essay (at least in practice tests).
If all of the below sounds like a bad guide for how to write a five-paragraph essay- hey, sorry, that's the best I could come up with. You could probably read something much better by a licensed professional with a degree and a crap-ton of experience. If you disagree with me, HELL IF I CARE please let me know, I'll try to fix whatever mistakes I made to avoid leading anyone onto the wrong path.
Important stuff is in bold, examples are in italics. (I mean, the examples are probably bad because I came up with them from the top of my head and the top of my head can be a strange place sometimes. I don't know.)
Cue second drum roll!

Stuff To Do
1. Read the prompt, which is not tempting to do, seeing as its pretty much the same for each essay, (avoid that temptation) and find the central claim they want you to analyze.
Write an essay in which you explain how Kachikawawa builds an argument to persuade his audience that violins are not better than violas. In your essay, analyze how Kachikawawa uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage. Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Kachikawawa's claims, but rather explain how Kachikawawa builds an argument to persuade his audience.
In case you missed it, the central claim in this prompt is "violins are not better than violas".
  1. Then read the actual passage, keeping in mind the central claim, and the fact you are expected to be objective. We all have opinions, and sometimes the passages are pretty engaging and/or rage-inducing. Even though you might think violins are superior to violas, let's get real: no one cares. What the essay wants is for you to dissect Kachikawawa's reasoning, not a rant. If you want to rant you can start an online blog, join reddit, find debate.com or something, the world is full of internet addicted neckbeards willing to start WWIII to prove Aqua is better than Megumin.
3.While reading the passage, try to find three of four "literally techniques" the author uses to argue their point. Some more commonly used ones are:

  1. Now that you have read the passage, write an opening paragraph re-phrasing or blatantly copying the central claim, followed by a short list of literary techniques you have picked out. Something along the lines of this is suitable, of course it can be re-worded/fancied up a little:
In the article [title], [author] uses [technique 1], [technique 2], and [technique 3] to effectively persuade the reader that [central claim].
In his article "Violins vs Violas: A History", journalist and musician Kachikawawa argues that the viola, the butt of many jokes in the musical world, does not necessarily deserve all the hate it gets. To effectively build his position Kachikawawa uses argument and counterargument, personal anecdotes, and vivid language to appeal to the reader and form a strong central claim.
  1. All your paragraphs after the introduction but before the conclusion should focus on your selected literally techniques, explaining how they appear in the passage, how they work and why.

  1. Stuff to do to beef up your domain scores (Reading/Analysis/Writing)
~Reading~
Use quotes and paraphrases liberally to support your analysis of the passage. A rule of thumb I follow is whenever I make a statement about what the author said/thought, I try to include a paraphrase or quotation and then wrap it up by adding a phrase or two as to how it builds the central argument well. Looking at what the official SAT scoring rubric says, the difference between a "good" 6 and an "perfect" 8 is that the "good" essay shows you understand the text’s central idea, while a "perfect" essay also shows that you know the details and examples in the text and how they relate to the central idea.
~Writing~
Use precise language and obvious, sound logic. Stock up on smart-but-not-too-smart-sounding words like "bombarding", "predisposed", "effectively", "compelling", etc. so you sound informed but not like you swallowed a thesaurus. The graders are human too, believe it or not, and they are not going to be happy that you used "floccinaucinihilipilification" instead of describing something as simply worthless. Also make sure to organize the essay in a neat, standard way, following what you had written in the introduction. For example, if you set out that you will discuss facts and evidence, argument and counterargument, and then vivid language, follow that order. Make sure to have smooth transitions between paragraphs.
~Analysis~
This category is somewhat trickier, because it's the main thing that essay graders are looking for. It's also known as cold hard logic, which is something people (myself included) can struggle with.
I think the key thing here is that an answer to a prompt that does not elaborate why a particular writing device the author used worked does not demonstrate analysis, while one that explains why something worked the way it did demonstrates good analysis. (Wow, that was a confusing sentence.)
Example of poor analysis: By providing an analogy explaining why almost every Quora user is a convicted criminal, the author makes his point more credible.
Example of (somewhat) good analysis: The author uses an analogy to make his point more credible; because the readers will more likely believe the first part of the analogy, they will more readily accept the second (Quora users are mostly convicted criminals).
Ale make sure you support your critical thinking with concrete evidence. The example of analysis above does not provide a paraphrase or quote from the text to support it.
('m running out of ideas for examples now, sorry. Hope you get the point ^^.

Q&A
But I suck at writing!- Haha dude, can't help you [insert troll face of choosing]. I'm a bad writer. Go visit someplace else to improve your skills, and let me if the advice worked, won't you? However, I rather firmly believe that the ability to spout off purple prose won't get you a better grade on the SAT. As long as you make sure you have OK spellun, , you're, grammer is gfined, and you make sure you fucking use academic language cause otherwise you're an uncultured noob lol haha >3 (JK everything's kawaii-desu~~ <3 ^^). I don't think the essay readers will appreciate your vast knowledge of internet culture. Make sure you don't use I and My when making your argument?
Does length matter?- I've actually done some research on this, and YES! Length does matter. You're given four pages, plus one scrap page; I'd recommend writing 2-3 pages. The official study guide has evidence: “Due to the brief nature of the response, there is not enough evidence of writing ability to merit a score higher than 1. Overall, this response demonstrates inadequate writing.” (p. 176)
Can I include stuff I already know? I really have a strong opinion on this topic!- Nope and nope! This is for analysis, not for displaying your knowledge on the prompt subject matter.
What can I do to prepare?- A lot of stuff! Read my post, for instance. I would also recommend having a set "plan" in mind before test day (make sure to test it out in practice essays). Read the sample essays (to both familiarize yourself with what the graders are looking for and to boost your self-confidence after reading the badly-scored ones) Arm yourself with words, phrases, and techniques that you can toss around to impress the graders-I recommend reading literature analysis/reviews to stock up on them.
How do I improve my spelling/grammar?- Errr....dunno...Read a lot, I guess? Stay away from internet forums, which leech away at your academic writing skills? I honestly have no clue. I any case, a few mistakes in the English department often go unnoticed as long as your writing style is evenly sprinkled with them throughout. Shameless self-promotion: read this post. Also read this blog if you haven't already.
I really, really, really need to get a good grade. Is there a magic solution to all my problems that's totally work-free? I'm glad you asked, actually. Here it is: www.imgur.com/a/G6rU8 It totally works. Don't tell anyone though. ^^

Oh, and if you're that guy DMed me asking about grammar guide part II, consider this to be it. Your inquiry was much appreciated and it made my day (I mean it was like three months ago but still).

2020.09.09 03:24 Jeffamazon The REAL Greatest Short Burn of the Century

Disclaimer from Quora: A true short squeeze is a fairly rare event. There are probably 100 predicted for every 1 that occurs.*
There needs to be an unexpected positive event. This could be a huge earnings surprise, a takeover offer, new patent, drug approval, etc.
Unscrupulous stock promoters (PUMPERS) often dangle a potential short squeeze as a carrot to entice inexperienced investors to buy a bad stock. For instance, you will find predictions of a “massive short squeeze” on virtually every message board for every penny biotech stock. If you point out that there is insufficient short interest for a squeeze, the promoters just add lies about “naked short selling”.*
There, nobody sue me for the pennies I have. The following is all for entertainment purposes only:
The intro:
Sup gamblers. Feel bad about missing the gain train on TSLA? Fear not - something much greater and stupider is here.
You know Citadel? The MM that took all our money today? Well now we finally won’t be at the mercy of the MMs. Instead, we’re going to temporarily join forces with the Galactic Empire and hijack the death star.
Our choice of weapon... $GME.
The setup:
Huh?? Isn’t GME an absolute piece of trash stock? NO (will explain below), and even if it is, it's not entirely relevant. The this turn around is going to make TSLA's short burn look like warm afternoon tea.
Why? Well, most short squeezes are mostly math. This one is special because we have math AND great underlying news.
To be clear, this will happen whether or not we participate. I prefer us idiots to be a part of history. Here’s what’s up:
Short interest:
GME currently has between 85% - 99.8% short interest, depending on what site you use. For context, 20% is already considered high as the moon. TSLA and NFLX were around 30-40% at their peak. But GME’S ACTUAL SHORT INTEREST IS OVER 110%. In case you think I’ve gone nuts, look below:

Shares Outstanding (June 2) = 64.8M
Total = Public Float = SO - IS = 55.8 M
Total = Adjusted Public Float - Ryan Cohen = 49.6M

Shares Shorted (9/2) = 55.7M

% Shorted (Total Shares) = 86%
% Shorted (Float) = 99.8%
% Shorted (Adj. Float) = 112.3%

This is unheard of. Also, the short interest ratio/days to cover is 16 DAYS right now. Shorts are beyond trapped in their position. And the insiders? They won’t sell. In fact.. they’ve been BUYING.
Fine, what if the shorts are correct? They’ve been printing for 5 years. Ok fellow gamblers, here’s where the real DD comes in. The reversal:
3 big things will cause this reversal. Ryan Cohen, retail option buying, and Kenny G (Citadel) himself.
Who’s Ryan Cohen?
Ryan Cohen sold Chewy in 2017 for $3.3 billion. He poured most of his money into Apple and Wells Fargo, saying he hates diversification and only goes all in into things he has high conviction in. Cohen is a Buffet-like investor. He is the largest individual owner of AAPL, and has sat on his hands doing nothing for 3 years.
Until last week… he went long on $GME.
Who cares right? He’s just another gambler like us willing to lose money. Not in this case… RC is special due to his expertise in e-commerce. He understands how a smaller company can compete against Amazon and Walmart despite heavy competition. THAT, combined with his hatred against diworsification makes his interest in GME a bit special.
RC can spin this into an e-commerce/tech company, which would make Wall Street drool from their mouths. He’s already caught the attention of a few people, hence the recent 75% run up since the RC announcement.
RC only needs to disclose his investments every 10 days. If he’s been buying since 8/31, we won’t know until this week.
Add to that, the original contrarian Michael Burry found that 90% of stores were free cash flow positive before COVID. GME’s balance sheet is healthy with $100M in net cash (around $500M cash and $400M debt), so they aren’t going bankrupt anytime soon. They also added 2 more activist investors, Kurtis Wolf and Paul Evans, who were nominated by Hestia Capital Partners and Permit Capital Enterprise Fund, to turn the ship around.
All this meaning, prominent figures have sKiN iN tHe gAmE, and if needed (unlikely) they have more cash to see it through.
Second and third, degenerate gambling retail robinhooders + CITADEL. Told you we’re going to work with him this time.
Thanks to MMs literally not using their brain and relying on ze maths to configure their entire business, we can take advantage of them sleeping at the wheel for a few seconds, and cause them to ram into GME for us.
It looks like this: RH Call Option buying -> MM Delta hedging/share purchase -> short squeezing -> Greater retail/RHers price action chasing/call option buying -> MM Delta hedging/share purchase -> short squeezing -> Institutional and new channels flip the script -> GME to $400+ -> cash out.
By the way. This is NOT a pump and dump. This is a kick in the shorts’ teeth. The stock will STAY HIGH.
For reference: if $GME was trading at the same P/S multiple as $CHWY, the share price would be $420.
Maths:
On being delta neutral - quick refresher from a WSB classic:
“Part of the reason we see outsized moves is when a stock starts moving the dealers who are short the calls need to buy more stock to hedge. This can easily double the amount of buying pressure out there and lead to very exaggerated moves.
As the stock goes up, so does the delta of the stocks calls and dealers who were originally perfectly delta hedged before the move effectively become short the stock as it moves higher so they need to buy more stock to “hedge up” or flatten their exposure/risk."
Remember, since GME is literally 99.8% of float short (ignoring RC’s shares for now) they currently HAVE LESS THAN 50,000 SHARES IN LIQUIDITY.
https://iborrowdesk.com/report/GME
As of writing this, delta on average is around 0.200, give or take. Higher for near dated (0.395) lower for long dated (0.195). Let’s be conservative and call it 0.2 for the time being. So now, for every call option I buy, MMs need to delta hedge with 20 shares.
Here’s where it gets insane:
If $100,000 in calls are bought from RH, Citadel is forced to buy the remaining 50,000 shares. I’m using 10/16 $15C for this example. This is an insanely small amount of money, especially with Ryan Cohen, retail idiots, and the rest of the SeekingAlpha vultures waiting for this play. It’s a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.
Let’s say Burry wakes up and decides to drop $600,000 in call options. This is going to force Kenny to delta hedge 300,000 in GME shares. When there are only under 50,000 shares available in PUBLIC FLOAT. This has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE IN HISTORY. In an accidental squeeze (KBIO, VW), the shorts can’t buy back and get priced out momentarily. Pump and dump. Not what's happening here.
In a contrarian bet leading to a squeeze, shorts bail their positions and the stock STAYS HIGH (TSLA, PTON). The stock is no longer being artificially suppressed, and the shorts are NOT going short again.
To tell you the truth, I don’t even know how far this is going to blow up, since there is literally no historical precedent for this. I just know things are about to get very very insane.
Now also add in the fact that GME is at a 5 year low, which means shorts can be largely satisfied with their gains, and are comfortable covering their shorts. Which, as a reminder, they have to BUY back.
-Cut to Ryan Gosling toppling the Jenga pieces-
The timing:
Alright, if you’ve read up to now, I can assume you’re in. IV is off the charts right now. That’s what happens when a stonk goes up 75% in a week. Sorry, but the Ryan Cohen news is actually big news.
PRE-EARNINGS BET
There’s no idea how the call will go. So place your bets if you think it will go well. If $GME absolutely misses the mark, this DD is worthless. BTW GME flopped the last 2 earnings - that's why there have been no big gains. Proceed at your own risk.
Few things I’m betting on:
First, GME beats earnings. All gaming companies, Nintendo, Sony, ATVI beat due to COVID lockdowns. Same store sales should be flat or up, with 300 less total stores. $GME is expected to post a loss of 1.27 EPS. That's way too low.
Second, activist investor activity. Cohen is sharp as a knife and will make sure things get aligned correctly. He's more financially oriented than most foundeCEOs. He can probably recite CHWY's balance sheet to you off the top of his head, and he understands the investing environment (bad IPOs, interest rates, SPACs). Meaning, he's not a gung ho YOLO Masayoshi / Grant Cardone coked out founder. He's disciplined. Yea I did some stalking... Well you know I had to.
Third, positive news cycle due to Console Cycle: http://charts.stocktwits.com/production/original_240233258.jpg
If you’re wondering why fund managers aren’t covering and going long, remember that they have a JOB. They can’t make contrarian bets at the risk of looking idiotic. Cohen and Burry can because they own their own money.
They can talk about how $GME is going to be Blockbustered. Only one problem - GME’s Netflix… is GME itself. By the way, VW was also heavily shorted during a recession because everyone thought they would be bankrupt. Jus sayin.
AFTER EARNINGS
If GME rockets after earnings, the short squeeze has started and we can pile on weekly 10-20% OTM options to force KG to delta hedge by buying shares, ad infinitum: see $TSLA.
If GME tanks, buy cheap options in anticipation of the short burn.
The trade:
In order to capture the biggest upside, the highest strike call option is best. Remember when TSLA was going up so fast they didn't even have existing options to match the parabolic gains? Same will happen here. We only have $30Cs now, so these will have to do.
15 Jan 2021 $30.00 C.
Also, since we don’t know when GME will skyrocket, this gives you time to capture any squeeze that happens.
16 Oct $15.00 C.
This lets you capture more asymmetric upside in case the squeeze happens quickly.
LAST, and timing is crucial here. ONLY WHEN I get the confirmed signal that the squeeze is happening, I will pound weeklies 10-20% above strike price. Again forcing Kenny to hedge with shares, causing shorts to cover and BUY back, increasing the delta of the call, getting retail and institutional attention, buying more calls/shares, delta hedge, shorts cover, ad infinitum.
The weeklies have the highest delta, so Citadel will be forced to hedge the most by buying shares. In other words, we’ll get the biggest bang for our buck in squeezing these.
There is a chance Citadel/MMs switches to buying puts to delta hedge. Like I said, they’re asleep at the wheel for a second, retail will likely ram before they change their algos.
However, once the squeeze takes off, not even Citadel will be able to stop it. In any case, if they do start to buy puts, we can sell the puts as a bonus.
Like dlkdev once said, the only way to beat a rigged game is to rig it even harder.
This is not fraud. There is no manipulation here. We aren’t forcing anyone to do anything. It’s going to happen with or without us. But I want to ride.
Earnings will light the match, but we can add all sorts of gasoline to the fire.
I stole some data/ideas from a couple of different articles on Seeking Alpha/reddit/google/youtube. I’m not claiming credit for this trade, I don’t really care. In fact, I beg you to completely ignore me. I even dare you to short GME. I’ll happily take your money.
TL;DR: $GME is vastly oversold.
GME is TSLA one year ago. GME is AAPL in 2017. Add to that the greatest short burn you’ll see in history, and you’re in for a hell of a show.
Also GME is uncorrelated with the market. It might even be negatively correlated (it was today). It's only worth $500M (3 Bel-Air houses) and fund managers are happy to cut a high risk/low return position. Let your cognitive biases run free.
Ryan Cohen & Michael Burry if you see this - you better buy as much as you can now. When GME gets to fair value of $26B+, you won't be able to take over the company and kick out the backwards exec team. Good luck.
**Edit1: $GME missed and tanked. Not much Cohen can do in 1 week. IV is dead and liquidity is still dry. Get cheap calls while you still can. PLAY IS STILL ON.

2020.09.08 07:41 SuzukiDesu How is the social construct of "adult" or "grown-up" defined and where?

So I know that if you google these questions you get a bunch of different answers. Some researchwhere one asks passersby how they'd define it. The researcher compiles that data and gives a conclusion. Others are advice-like websites who tell it to you in some kind of explanatory tone and then there are also just blog posts, where someone tells you a story which ends with: "And I guess that's adulthood." (following a life-story, after the punchline) Replies on Yahoo Answers or Quora have a similar tone like those blogs, someone telling their life story, giving a vague conclusion at the end.
What I'm looking for is this definition of "maturity"? (Not biological or legal, or anything scientific really.)
I know it probably goes somewhere along the lines of being aware of the consequences one's actions have, being self-sufficient... There's also a basic definition that comes to my mind when I think about it. Is there a clear definite source that actually tried to answer this question, which also delivers a conclusion from which we humans or I guess our education derived from?
Similar how Kant was trying to explain Enlightenment. Defining everything with in the definition as well I mean. Does something like that exist for "adulthood"/"maturity"/"grown-up"?
I hope I could make my question clear. If it's still too vague, please write that below so I'll change it asap. (It is in itself a vague topic, so yeah...)

2020.09.07 00:38 vivek_seth How I sped up a visualization by 60x using some graph theory, and a vector processing framework.

https://vivekseth.com/transitive-reduction/
I recently became curious about what information flow looks like in a p2p distributed system.
As peers produce new data, they send messages to the other peers. It is impossible to know the exact order in which messages were produced, so the best we can do is to partially order them. I wanted to use this partial ordering property to create a graph visualization from an array of messages.
It's not hard to build this graph, but it is challenging to make it fast. This blog post discusses a few of the solutions I tried, and how my final solution used a little graph theory, and Accelerate (a vector processing framework) to speed up the graph creation by 60x.

2020.09.05 02:07 cantcodePM What to learn to pass a technical APM interview in 3 weeks?

Hey everybody,
I'm an aspiring APM and just recently applied for Uber and Lyft APM and got their take home assignment. It's straightforward enough and given I have a PM internship under my belt and I would say overall strong Product knowledge I know I would have a good chance at passing with a good effort.
The only thing is down the road in the interview process, I know at least for Uber APM there is at least 1 Technical Engineering interview. Problem is even though I've put in my resume all of these languages (ie. Python, HTML/CSS, JS, Node, Express, SQL, etc.) - I really only have a really fundamental understanding of Web Dev and Data Analytics based off rushing through YouTube videos, and in reality wouldn't be able to put it into practice. I've got a basic understanding on what they do, how they work, and could probably slowly understand code with the help of some documentation.
I just read a Quora post and it seems like they'll have System Design questions that might ask me something like explain how I could redesign ________ (ie. Twitter, Uber, etc.).
I have no idea how they are designed outside of a really basic level. (Front end, backend, ... ?)
If I had 3 weeks to prepare for a technical engineering interview for an APM position, what do you think would be my best bet to focus on and pass? I'm assuming probably not diving into the nitty gritty of understanding React hooks, or how to hash passwords.
