2 for 1 First Post Bonanza - Blue Valentine and 500 Days Of Summer
Two films which both deal with relationships and love...love? yuck...no wait don't run away just yet one of them has Ryan Gosling in it (and for everyone else still don't run away as it's a great film).
It's called Blue Valentine (2010) and stars Heath Ledger's wife, the brilliant Michelle Williams. The chemistry between the two stars is what drives (cough) this film but what makes it so original and often quite hard to watch is the raw way it puts you front and centre of their relationship. It's almost like you're intruding on moments too personal and the impact is you do genuinely see them as real flawed people and are invested in what happens to them. It also has a very loose almost improvised air to it which adds to the authenticity. A great film to watch with a partner...or not depending on how you look at it..
The second one is called 500 Days Of Summer (2009) and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoey Deschanel. The tonal shifts and playing around with the concept of time give this film a really unique quality. It's not for everyone, especially if you prefer linear story telling, but what you gain with its unusual format is a hypnotic and strangely poignant film about the very nature of relationships. Quirky, funny, charming and fresh are just some of the cliches that have been thrown at Zoey Deschanel, but this was her first big break and in many ways the success of the film hinges on her being as quixotic as she is, or rather as she appears to be. A genuinely funny film which gets you thinking without you even realizing I'd put it way higher than the Oscar laden Blah Blah Land and its forced bonhommie.

EDIT: Don't worry this is not a love in

2020.01.06 20:38 sickandtired828207 Michelle Williams' speech at the Golden Globes

I watched the Golden Globe awards last night and was moved by Michelle Williams' speech as she accepted her award for her performance in "Fosse/Verdon".
Though she is not childfree (she has a 14-year-old daughter, whose father was Heath Ledger, and is expecting another child with her current partner) she is a big advocate for women's right to choose.
I've read a lot of of criticism today of her speech, particularly anti-choicers trying to twist it as "I'm successful today because I killed my babies for my own convenience!", but I personally felt her speech was very powerful and candid.
This part really resonated with me:
"I am grateful to live in a moment in our society where choice exists, because as girls and women, things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice."
"I've tried my very best to live a life of my own making, not just a series of events that happened to me, but one that I could stand back and look at and recognize my handwriting all over, sometimes messy and scrawling, sometimes careful and precise, but one that I carved with my own hand."
She continued:
"I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose. To choose when to have my children and with whom. When I felt supported and able to balance our lives, knowing as all mothers know that the scales must and will tilt toward our children."
Now I know my choices might look different than yours, but thank God or whoever you pray to that we live in a country founded on the principles that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours. So, women 18 to 118, when it is time to vote please do so in your self-interest. It's what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them but don't forget we are the largest voting body in this country. Let's make it look more like us."
I know some people may disagree with her using this platform as an opportunity to express her pro-choice beliefs, but I think it's important to de-stigmatize abortion, and to debunk the myth that all women who have abortions regret them, and the false belief that women who have abortions become sterile and can't have children later on if they choose to.
